There are, however, some added factors to keep in mind when searching for the right vehicle, especially when it comes to history and reliability. Do Your Research
Before you begin to search for a car, you should ask yourself if there is a certain type of vehicle that you need. By choosing what type of vehicle to look for, you'll have a more specific list of inspection items to check. When researching the vehicle, find out the common problems for the models you're considering.
Exterior Checks
You should always check the body condition. Walk around the vehicle and make note of any dents, scratches or rest. Also, be sure to look at the body panels. Everything should line up evenly, and the doors, hood and trunk should be able to open and close. While you're walking around the vehicle, inspect the tires also. They should all be the same brand and should be in solid condition (i.e. no cracks, bulges, scuffing or bad tread). Lastly, always check the lights. They should all work properly, and they shouldn't have any cracks or damage or show signs of moisture.
Interior Checks
When you're inspecting the inside of a vehicle, one of the most important things to check for is an odor. If the car smells like mold, must or mildew, that could mean a water leak or flood damage. Also, check the seats to see if they're worn or have any tears in the upholstery. Ensure the seats function properly and that you can get the driver's seat into a comfortable position. Always test out the controls and instruments to see that they are working properly. Finally, look at the roof to check for signs of staining or water leaking through a sunroof or window.
Under the Hood
When looking under the hood, be sure to check the belts, hoses, fluids, oil and transmission fluid. Everything should be at its correct level, and there shouldn't be any cracks, leaks or water. Also, look beneath the vehicle to see if anything is leaking.
The Test Drive
Test-driving a car, truck or SUV is easily one of the most critical parts of your inspection. When starting the engine, see how long it takes for the car to start or if there are any odd noises. Take the vehicle on a variety of roads so you can test it at different speeds. Additionally, note if the transmission shifts smoothly and that the brakes offer good stopping power without pulling the vehicle to either side.
Paperwork and Mechanic's Inspection
Before you close the deal on your car, you need to get the vehicle identification number (VIN) and run a Vehicle History Report. Most dealers will provide a report on all of their used vehicles. Also have a trusted repair shop fully inspect the vehicle before you purchase it.
